After-School Satan Clubs

If you told me when I was in seminary that we would be dealing with After School Satan Clubs (which don’t worship Satan, by the way), I am not sure I would have believed you. I’m not sure I would have even known what they were! In my first church, the biggest problem I had to deal with from outside the church was Sunday morning soccer games. The world has changed so much over the years and will continue to do so into the future. And a big part of the blame lies with the church. Christians held social and cultural sway for so long that, like all privileges, we can’t fathom what is happening around us.

I was reminded of this again when we gathered in the center of Reading, PA to light the Menorah. One corner had a Nativity Scene, another a Christmas tree (representing pagan religion, I guess), and the third the Menorah. One corner is left open, so I guess the After School Satan Clubs can decorate that next year. This is the problem with parading one’s religion on the public square – if one is allowed, all must be allowed. The Constitution does not allow for public support of a particular religion, so when that door is opened, it can become a free-for-all. It has, and it should.

I cannot tell you how many people I have known over the years who have wanted Christian prayer to be put back into the schools, yet don’t attend worship regularly. They want the 10 Commandments on public buildings but don’t have them on the sides of their homes. They want to be allowed to say Merry Christmas (which we are) but go bonkers when someone wishes them Happy Holidays. It is our own arrogance as a pretend Christian nation; we want it our way alone, which goes against everything Jesus – and other religions – stands for. Too many people want America to be what it was in the 1950’s. That won’t happen – to which I say, Thank God!

I know this rant won’t reach those who need it. It still must be said though. Maybe, just maybe, one of you will pass this on to one of your Christian Nationalist acquaintances and it will help them to see the light. I can only hope that happens. In the meanwhile, I wish you an Awesome Advent as you walk towards Christmas. I wish you well regardless of your religious, or non-religious persuasion. Ignore the noise and keep the faith. It will be 2024 soon enough.

Prayer – Guide us God, as we navigate this strange place we love. Help us to be more considerate of others. Amen.
